October Newsletter

Hello to Silver State friends and family,

October is always a busy month in the volleyball world. High School and College volleyball is in full swing and on a club level we are getting ready for November tryouts.

Tryouts will take place November 5th and 6th with makeup tryouts on the 7th. For more info on tryouts and to register please go to the Silver State website. The cost of tryouts is $30 if registered before November 1st and $50 after that date and for walk ups.

There will be three Tryout Prep clinics to help players prepare for tryouts and these will take place October 23rd in Reno and October 30th and November 2nd in Carson City. The clinics will also include a 30 minute Q&A about the tryout process. Sign up here.

We are happy to announce a partnership with Youth Pros for this season. They will provide Player Profile Testing, a mental gym, nutrition info, training info, and lots of other cool features. Once a player registers for tryouts they will receive a username and password, this will give them access to the youth pros site and will allow them to take the TAP test. We ask that all players try and take the test prior to tryouts. We will be implementing many of the features Youth Pros provides during the season.

Former Silver State and Oregon State star player Darby Reeder has taken over The VolleyBlog which posts articles by coaches, former players, and UNR nutritionist Shavawn M. Forester PhD RDN (aka The Nutrient Dense RDN). The blog will also be home to current club news. Recent articles have featured How to Become the Ultimate Pepper Partner and an interview with former National Team/Professional team/ new SSVC coach Sasha Gutor.

Sasha Gutor joins SSVC as the 18 Mizuno Head Coach as well as lead instructor of the Silver State Volleyball Academy. Sasha has coached USA High performance and national teams in Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. He is considered by many to be one of the top setting coaches in the world in addition to a true teacher of the sport of volleyball.

The Volleyball Academy kicked off over the summer and has become an instant hit for those players 8 -14 years old looking to learn or improve their volleyball skills. The academy is 8 clinics each month and is a skill based learning process. Players are grouped by skill and not age and will move up through the various levels. This is a great way for young players to try volleyball, prepare for the club season, or for players that want to play multiple sports but also train for their middle school team.

Silver State Athletic Center, home of SSVC is sponsoring the Friday Night Rivals Volleyball on Reno Channel 21. See schedule here.

On the Local Sports Program (Different channels based on your cable company) longtime Silver State coach Mike Williams is doing play by play announcing for high school volleyball.

Good luck to all players in your schools season and look forward to seeing you in the gym,
